It’s vent time! As many of you already know (and if you don’t, you really haven’t been paying attention 😉), I’m a fairly prolific poster with a couple of blogs. One, Through My Eyes, is about genealogy and family stories. The other, So Many Books… So Little Time, is all things book-related—essays, reviews, commentary, whatever I’ve been reading or thinking about. I make no money from either; it’s purely for fun. I hadn’t updated the book blog in a long time and only recently got back into it.
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been trying (with mixed success) to share some of those reviews on social media—X, Bluesky, and Facebook—using a direct link to the blog. X and Bluesky are no problem; the posts go through fine. Facebook is the sticking point. It’s not really the platform itself, but the groups I belong to. A lot of them don’t allow external links because of spam concerns, which I understand. The practical headaches are twofold: reviews and essays are often too long for a typical social-media post and need reformatting, and many public book groups (especially the bigger ones) require admin approval, with no grace period even for established members. One group in particular has over a million members, so it’s frustrating to have three or four posts sitting in a queue for over a week, only to have them denied with no explanation as to what’s wrong with them. Yes, one of the posts had a link to my blog, which I’ve since removed. I’ve written out shortened versions of the reviews, and the photos attached are the published book covers—nothing provocative. I don’t get it, and now I’m so annoyed that I want to leave that stick-up-its-backside group altogether.
It would be nice if people read my stuff. I think it’s relatable, easy to read, informative, and—somewhat entertaining… most of the time. If people can’t or prefer not to read my posts, I’m okay with that too—that’s what the scrollbar is for. Anyway, vent over. Thanks for reading!
